Communists confront Fascists at the count
The Communist Party didn't allow the BNP racists the gloss of
respectiblility at the election count in Newport, confronting them and challenging
them throughout the night. The BNP's police bodyguards intervened on a number
of occassion threatening to arrest 4 different Comrades during the night before
eventually arresting Robert Griffiths' election agent Carol Virgo.
The BNP had earlier in the night hurled racist abuse at a black
Communist Party member.
Robert Griffiths condemned the police in his election count speech,
making the observation that during the war his grandfather was awarded medals
for shooting fascists but now if you verbally challenge them you are arrested.
Mr Griffiths went on to say, "The police are performing their usual role
of putting the protection of fascist before free sppech and human rights."
Carol Virgo was eventually released from the police station at
4 in the morning to a rapturous reception from awaitng comrades.
